This didn’t really lead to any problems, except that we weren’t always entirely sure what we could and couldn’t do (for example, we couldn’t drag blocks around in pre-made songs). SonicFire Pro is easy to use, although it lacks any sort of manual and the Help is rather light. One really cool feature of the Maestro style chooser/library tool is that it allows uses to hear samples of media online before buying. We reviewed the $499 version that came with five music CDs. This means a minimum outlay of $299 and includes two music CDs. Once you are ready to make some money, you are definitely going to need 44kHz media and the proper license to use the music. There is a free demo version and there are a number of lite versions that ship with video editors. The price range for getting into Sonicfire is very broad. You get high quality buyout music with arrangements in a variety of styles and genres, all with customizable durations to fit any project. SmartSound offers users the best of both worlds. Further, buyout music limits you in duration and style, and it can be tricky to make the music fit the length of your project. Some buyout music is fully orchestrated, but many libraries are composed and performed on synthesizers and do not sound at all realistic. If you need music that’s guaranteed to sound good, and you need it fast, Sonicfire wins hands down.īuyout music has the potential to beat Sonicfire in the quality department as well, but only if you shop carefully. If you have a good ear and can piece individual loops into 8-bar phrases, chord progressions, intros, breaks and decisive conclusions, you’ll very likely enjoy the many hours you’ll spend using a loop-based music tool. You can find drum loops from Mick Fleetwood, acoustic winds from Bill Laswell, heavy funk from George Clinton and real symphonic samples from starving classical musicians. Loop-based tools, such as Sonic Foundry’s ACID (recently acquired by Sony), have the potential to beat Sonicfire in the quality department. It isn’t at all fair to compare Sonicfire soundtracks to those from Aaron Copland, Andre Previn or John Williams, so what should you compare it to? Sonicfire Pro doesn’t fit cleanly into either of the two common categories: loop-based music creation tools and buyout music. The drums occasionally sounded artificial and wind instruments were sometimes noticeably synthetic, but on the whole, we were pleased with the quality of the instrumentation. Some of the music we previewed came right from the Music Bakery, which is a major player in the buyout music biz. Sonicfire tracks rely heavily on synthesized instruments, but the quality is very good and there are quite a few acoustics in the mix as well. The music that you get from Sonicfire Pro is intended to be background music, which is exactly what videographers will use it for. This music isn’t likely to earn a Grammy or an Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack, but it does evoke the right mood for a video music bed or film score. Sonicfire Pro soundtracks are 44kHz CD-quality, which is noticeably better than the home-movie oriented 22kHz Movie Maestro product. The coordinated soundtrack gave the show a unified and professional feel. For example, we created a solid 30-second intro for our project that ended with an upbeat bang just before our narrator turned to the camera with a warm "Welcome to the Show." Between segments, we were able to use different elements from the same piece as segues into the various parts of the program and, finally, we created a longer and steadier variation for the closing credits. At the same time, it also gives you a surprising amount of flexibility. This modular paradigm makes song creation very easy and very nearly foolproof. You can build your own song from scratch or use them to add onto the current song. Each element is self-sufficient and can be used by itself to some extent. This larger block is made up of smaller blocks, that users can sort and adjust however they like. Users can change the duration by simply dragging the edges of the block. The soundtrack appears as a single block that matches whatever duration you want. The selected tune opened in the timeline, matching our specified duration precisely. We then used the SmartSound Maestro to select a broad style category and a specific song title. While this takes a little time and occupies some considerable space on the drive, it makes the program much faster. We ran the program and then used its library management tool to import a SmartSound Palette CD-ROM to our hard disk drive. First, we installed the small (16MB) Sonicfire Pro apps on our WinXP machine.

In order to use this non-Apple hardware and software, users must use the Startup Security Utility and choose “Reduced Security.” These users are not just surfing the web or watching movies on their Macs but need to add additional hardware and software in order to create compelling content for others to watch. Unfortunately, this restriction renders an M1 Mac unusable for many professional video editors and photographers. Larry notes: 3rd-party drivers are system-level software that controls external gear like storage, control panels, audio interfaces and the like. This setting is called “Full Security” in the Startup Security Utility. This means you can’t install and run an older version of macOS and you can’t load any drivers that Apple didn’t build. This feature, when enabled, only allows the latest version of macOS to be installed and run and prevented all third-party drivers from loading. With the M1 Macs, Apple wanted to add an additional feature to further prevent malware on macOS. After a driver has been modified, the code signature no longer matches the code in the driver and macOS will refuse to load it. This code signature also allows macOS to detect if a driver has been modified. This restriction has been part of every release of macOS since 10.14.5 and is probably the single biggest reason that macOS is relatively malware free. If a driver has not been scanned, found to be malware free and signed by Apple, macOS will refuse to load it. Starting with macOS 10.14.5, the operating system requires all 3rd party drivers to be scanned for malware and cryptographically signed by Apple prior to being released by the developer. Therefore, I think we only need to address M1 Macs. M1 Macs, users must reduce security and this is the concern we should focus on. In the current version of macOS, there is no reason to lower the security settings on Intel Macs. I contacted the folks at OWC to learn more and here is their response. I am considering buying this OWC U.2 RAID using 4x2TB Samsung 970 EVOs. I don’t understand the risks, but wonder if you have insights. It seems like getting used to empty stands after a few games will be easier than getting used to a completely pre-programmed, CGI crowd. But we also know how jarring watching a game in an empty stadium is on TV." "We're not looking to fool everyone," Zager adds. "Sports is supposed to be an escape and when people have that escape we want it to feel as normal as possible when there’s very little normalcy, like a crowd at a baseball game on a Saturday." "We believe that what we’re doing is creating a natural viewing experience,” says Fox Sports vice president of live productions Brad Zager. And since execs at Fox Sports couldn't get their minds around broadcasting baseball games, night after night, with completely empty stands, they're going to try something new and completely bizarre: computer-generated crowds, and laugh-track-esque canned cheers.Īs the Associated Press reports, Fox Sports is merely "testing" this concept out for now, and waiting to see how crowds react - but do we have any doubt that Twitter is going to have a field day with this fake crowd business? Poignant, as though they’d decided that if their lives were threatened they would rather die married than apart. As nearby patients cried out in pain amid my hospital room and enemies were at the gates, they had their wedding officiated by their friend, a farmer. I once had two dwarves, a doctor and surgeon, who decided to get married in the middle of an ongoing crisis. That simulated idiocy can be obnoxious at times, but it can also result in some beautiful stories. Everyone has their own tales of the time Urist sprinted out into a goblin horde because they forgot their socks in the pasture, or of moments when a horrible beast emerged from the caverns – opposed only by your brave militia – and some hapless child went skipping through the battlefield to go and pick mushrooms in the lower caves. It sounds like a lot – and it is – but learning real-world information and then being able to immediately employ it in your game is extremely rewarding.įor example, dwarves are infamous for leaving things outside the fortress and then later trying to retrieve them no matter the circumstances. You'll almost certainly read an article describing what a quern is. You'll somehow learn the difference between gabbro and granite. It's a game where you'll become an amateur mineralogist – as all good dwarves are – to figure out where in the geological strata to dig for iron, tin, coal, or gold. This is, after all, a game where you have to construct separate workshops to spin plant fiber into thread, then weave thread into cloth, then optionally dye the cloth, before making even a single dwarven sock. Even so, a tutorial still can't teach a tenth of what you’ll likely want to know over the course of your adventure, and those new to this genre will need patience. Its new tutorials go a long way toward teaching you how to play by setting you up with a world, a relatively safe embark site, and a fortress that can supply its own necessities (e.g. Dwarf Meets Worldįor all that improvement – and it is a shockingly huge and remarkably thorough improvement – Dwarf Fortress is still an unapologetically complex game underneath. More vital for new players, you can click a tile to easily get a tabbed inventory of everyone and everything on it, including quick buttons for basic interactions like forbidding your dwarves to touch it – you know, for when you kill that giant six-eyed cave bird with poisonous blood and your chef immediately tries to get a jump start on tomorrow's dinner. The proper mouse support alone is, to me, worth the cost of entry here: You can paint out walls, mining tunnels, and more with ease. Perhaps most notably, Dwarf Fortress’ Steam version brings the controls out of the early ‘90s, adding the integrated ability to use the mouse, a fully-fledged graphical interface, and settings menus rather than being forced to directly edit game files if you want to adjust difficulty. Atop that is a soundtrack of classical guitar (an homage to the single-track guitar noodling that once accompanied the free version of Dwarf Fortress) that both fits the legacy and includes delights like singing in the actual in-game dwarven language. This fresh coat of paint is overlaid with a lively new soundscape of nature noises, dwarven work, tavern chatter, and whistling cavern winds that provides an actual sense of place. Beyond improving on ASCII symbols, the sprites and tiles – both static and dynamic – are a superb example of the pixel artist's craft. Even the special Forgotten Beasts, Titans, and Demons, randomized and unique as they are, have generated appearances to match. There are graphics for hundreds of different animals and animal-men, not to mention for dragons, hydras, unicorns, and the like. The refreshed graphics use a system of sprites, dynamically assembled, to show the dwarven world in all its glory. Even today, among its many successors, nothing creates a world and fills it with interesting characters so reliably as Dwarf Fortress, and it is a sublime experience to watch this simulation of a world at work as you play your part in it.ĭoing so is far easier now. Developer Bay 12 Games effectively founded the genre we now call the Colony Sim with its initial release in 2006, paving the way for games like RimWorld while influencing countless others, and it's still a reminder of how this combination of procedural generation and rules-based, reality-driven simulation can create unparalleled stories on the fly. Even if you never dared these intimidating tunnels yourself, you’ve almost certainly felt Dwarf Fortress’ impact elsewhere. According to Oliver, the Mike Crockett account also pretended to be an Australian, to mislead people he was Luke Mckee (when it almost certainly isn't). These emails all belong to the same person using pseudonyms (this has been confirmed by email leaks where Scott Stevens admits to being Mike Crockett) who has tried to hide their identity by pretending to be from the USA and using numerous fake names. Mike Crockett was using the following three email addresses: While he did not post on CLP himself, he proudly defamed Null's relatives on EgyptSearch. Oliver briefly advertised the CandiceLynnPotter wiki on EgyptSearch forums. It seems his judgement was correct because members of the autistic legion of doom have since repeatedly stated that they would keep attacking anyone connected to Kiwi Farms even if Null gave in to their blackmail. He refused and brought the Farms back up just three weeks after shutting them down, realising that no matter what he did the autistic legion wouldn't leave his family alone. In other words, they were trying to coerce Null into committing a crime. Emails posted by Joshua Moon (Null) at Kiwi Farms show Mike Crockett demanded to be given the site database and the donor list so that they could keep harassing Kiwi Farmers indefinitely Vordrak also wanted the list as reassurance the Farms would permanently remain offline. [ Here is a copy of one of the emails sent to the employers of Null's mother, leaked by Oliver Smith.īut the farms shutting down wasn't enough for some members of Vordrak's group. This resulted in the Farms temporarily shutting down. Eventually, a distant relative begged Null to give in and make the harassment stop. Repeated emails to the employers of Null's mother resulted in her getting fired, an event the autistic legion gloated about for months. They sent emails, created attack blogs, doxed Joshua on the forum Egyptsearch and made phone calls to every relative they could find, alerting them that Null was running what they called a "racist cyberbullying site" and that Joshua was a pedophile. Vordrak, Oliver Smith and Eddie Dzial teamed up to attack Null's family directly. According to Donny Long, Mike Crockett is really Vordrak. Mike Crockett is now known to be mostly responsible for posts at CLP, and was sending threats to Null and Kiwi Farms via email. Since June, Oliver Smith and Donny Long (or his "fan") both left the group and are no longer on friendly terms with Sam. The remaining most active members of the autistic legion of doom are Samuel Collingwood Smith, Mike Crockett aka Scott Stevens aka Joe Austin and Jonathan Bishop. However, not every member of the mailing list is active in the crusade Raven Sparks and Nate Spidgewood have very little involvement. Mikemikev - not in group, but left some comments on Vordrak's blog supporting the group and doxed Kiwi Farms members on CLP wiki.Tommy Tooter ( expelled from the group by Vordrak in December 2016 after leaking the list).Oliver Smith (left the group in June 2017, although says he did in March).Donny Long aka "Gene Ross" aka "Candice" (left the group in June 2017).Mike Crockett aka Scott Stevens aka Joe Austin (suspected to be Sam Smith).Part of the mailing list was leaked by Tommy Tooter in December 2016. Here is a leaked message to Donny Long calling Oliver, Sam and Jonathan leaders in the fight against Kiwi Farms Oliver would later leave the group and distance himself. “I heard the news today, and felt that she has finally been released," said filmmaker Shah on Monday. Ironically, the very law that she has brought for India shows clearly that there is free will over fate," she told Mint in November 2014. “Those who claim to love her won’t let her go because they think that suffering is in her destiny. According to Virani, this was the biggest irony of the case. They argued against KEM Hospital’s decision to keep Shanbaug on feed, even though, they argued, there was no proof of Shanbaug’s awareness of auditory, visual, somatic and motor stimuli. The film, Passive Euthanasia: Kahaani Karuna Ki (A Story Of Compassion), was released last year. She had supporters outside the hospital too-people like Virani, who also collaborated with filmmaker Chetan Shah to make a film on Shanbaug. She could not stand hunger and hated vegetarian food," said tutor nurse Gajula Kalpana. In the 42 years she had been in KEM Hospital, Shanbaug had very few visitors. Pai was one of those who came to pay their last respects at the hospital on Monday. Umesh Pai, her neighbour in her village, said that she was the only one of her eight siblings to have been educated and was very ambitious. Shanbaug who lost her father at the age of 10, came to Mumbai from Haldipur, Karnataka, to study nursing. The court declared the hospital staff as her “next friend", legally and morally responsible for all medical decisions pertaining to her and rejected Virani’s appeal to be declared “next friend". The decision, they ruled, was one that KEM Hospital staff, who had been caring for her since the assault, were best placed to take. The question now is whether her life support system (which is done by feeding her) should be withdrawn, and at whose instance?" the judges said. “In all probability, she will continue to be in the state in which she is in till her death. The apex court found that there appeared little possibility of Shanbaug coming out of PVS. Passive euthanasia entails a patient being allowed to die by limiting medical intervention, not escalating already aggressive treatment, withholding or withdrawing artificial life support in cases that are judged to be medically futile.Īctive euthanasia involves administering lethal substances to end life. Two years later, justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra delivered a 110-page judgement ruling that in cases of irreversible illness, and after a thorough medical evaluation, passive euthanasia should be permitted.įor the first time in India, a distinction was made between passive and active euthanasia. Pinki Virani, a journalist who wrote a 1998 book about Shanbaug called Aruna’s Story, filed a public interest litigation in the Supreme Court in 2009 pleading for euthanasia for Shanbaug. Over the years, Shanbaug became a symbol for many things-she was the gutsy rape survivor who ‘stuck on’, she was the recipient of unquestioning caregiving by KEM nurses and doctors, and she was the lightning rod around which the debate on passive euthanasia raged. Walmiki was convicted, and served two concurrent seven-year sentences for assault and robbery, but not for rape or sexual molestation, as sodomy was not covered by the law on rape in 1973. She was engaged to be married to a resident doctor at KEM Hospital. The asphyxiation cut off the oxygen supply to her brain, leaving her blind, deaf, and immobile. Shanbaug was left in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) after a ward boy, Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki, raped her on the night of 27 November 1973, while strangulating her with a dog chain. “She appeared to be improving, but suddenly slipped into cardiac arrest even though we tried to revive her" said KEM Hospital dean Avinash Supe. She was rushed to the intensive care unit on Thursday and put on antibiotics after nurses noticed she was having trouble breathing. She was diagnosed with a pneumatic patch and was put on ventilator support five days ago. Shanbaug, 66, died after suffering from a serious bout of pneumonia last week. It was where Shanbaug had lain for 42 years, its longest resident. Ostrich Sans comes in different weights ranging from Thin to Bold and Inline.
